Learn About Poverty's Impact

Poverty is an extreme problem in many parts of the world today, including right here in here in the United States. Half the world, nearly 3 billion people, live on less than $2 a day. (*1) 1 billion of these are children. (*3)

Living in a life of poverty means that you spend your day working desperately to feed your family. It means your children do not go to school because you can not afford the tuition to send them. You also need their help to provide food in order for your family to survive. It means limited if any access to health care, preventative or diagnostic. Usually people in extreme poverty are surrounded by extreme poverty, leaving them few job opportunities.

DFC offers several creations by artisans who are finding their ways out of extreme poverty simply by exploring their areas of talent. Purchasing their products increases their demand and competitiveness in the global market. Knowing they are providing for others gives these artisans hope to create new products and encourages their livelihood. More money infused to them results in increased money to their family and communities creating change for the artisans themselves, their children and those around them.
